Critical Thinking

As a point guard for my basketball team, I have to constantly think of new plays on the spot during a game. Although we have set plays, sometimes things don’t always go as planned. In times like this, I have to make smart decision that can get the team easy baskets, which have allowed me to develop my problem-solving, critical thinking skills.

Presentation Skills

When I was in 6th grade, my parents enrolled me in a public speaking class. This class allowed my confidence to grow, and since then I have had no problem talking in front of an audience whenever I have to present my projects in school. I can apply this to a work setting when I have to present projects or deliverables to my boss or to a potential client.

Interpersonal Skills

Growing up, I was a very outgoing person. When I moved from Edison to South Brunswick, I had to work to make new friends and connections at an early age. This pushed me to become increasingly used to introducing myself to strangers, getting along with various personalities, and creating an environment where everyone is comfortable. I can bring this skill to my work because I am not afraid to meet and work with new people, and I can contribute positively to a work atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.

Collaboration Skills

Every time there is a group project/assignment in or out of school, I am generally the one who brings everybody together to complete the task. For example, in middle school, a few students and I had to do an English project, and while every other group was fooling around, I stepped up and became the unofficial leader of my team to ensure we finished the project early, which ultimately got us extra credit. This skill can be applied to my job, since I can work on a variety of teams and consistently avoid conflicts to ensure the team's overall success.

Detail-Oriented

Whenever I find myself working on a project, I'm always looking at the small details and focusing on the little parts that altogether create a big picture. This allows me to catch many of my mistakes and focus wholeheartedly on tasks at hand; for example, when I was initially learning Taekwondo, I had to focus on small motions and details that made up the entire 'form' that I had to memorize and perform. This skill will allow me to always complete my work to the highest quality in a job setting.
