Basketball

Playing basketball for the past ten years has taught me the value of teamwork and collaboration. Throughout this time, I have encountered many different types of people on my teams and have seen various combinations of people that did and sometimes didn’t get along. Although each group had different dynamics, it was essential that everyone worked together in the end to ensure eventual success of the team. I had to regularly set aside my personal feelings regardless of what they were, and focus on putting the team’s best interest first. This experience has taught me to work well with all types of people regardless of the situation, and the teamwork and collaboration skills I have developed as a result will make me an asset in the workplace. As an investment banking analyst, I know I can apply what I have learned from this experience to ensure that I can work on a variety of different projects and teams successfully.

Volunteering

Spending time each Saturday volunteering at my local library has allowed me to learn about responsibility and commitment. I have been partaking in this activity for two years, and it is a commitment that I intend to continue throughout my high school career. While at the library, I am a shelf reader; this means that I have to ensure that all the books are sorted correctly by call number, and then by title. Each day I contribute to the organization and cleanliness of the library by completing these tasks, and this is not a responsibility that I take lightly. It is important to me because everything I do, I aspire to complete to my fullest capability; having this regular commitment has allowed me understand the meaning behind taking responsibility seriously, and demonstrate dedication in a setting where I can feel myself making a positive difference. This is a mentality that I plan to take with me in the real world, and apply to a job as an investment banking analyst.

Taekwondo

Throughout the time it took for me to earn my first degree black belt, I have learned about discipline and focus, which are skills that I use in my life to this day. When I first joined, I had very little focus and a short attention span, but since the beginning my instructor constantly preached about working hard and aiming at making goals into reality. In order to succeed at taekwondo, focus and memorization is key as you must to concentrate in order to break boards, and successfully remember different forms and techniques that are taught.  Each year that I spent, and belt that I received showed me the results that hard work can achieve, and I believe this make me a great worker to be around in a job setting. I plan to focus on completing any work that I am given always to the best of my ability, and using discipline to ensure that I can find success in my job, and career path.
